Genuine GM Belts and Hoses

The Function of Belts and Hoses in Your Car

While the number of belts and hoses vary depending on your model, they are ubiquitous in all vehicle types. Here are four major belts and their role in your vehicle.

What Does the Serpentine Belt Do?

The serpentine belt or drive belt transmits power from the crankshaft to major parts and accessories. These components include the air-conditioning, power steering, and alternator.

What Does the Radiator Hose Do?

Radiator hoses serve as the channel for coolant to pass from the radiator core to the top of the engine. Leaks in the radiator hose can deplete the amount of coolant, resulting in the overheating of the engine.

What Does the Timing Belt Do?

The timing belt orchestrates the opening and closing of intake and exhaust valves of the engine. Although many modern vehicles come with a maintenance-free timing chain, some models still come with a timing belt that needs replacement after about 80,000 to 100,000 miles.

What Does the Brake Hose Do?

Brake hoses transmit brake fluid from the master cylinder to the brakes, applying hydraulic pressure that ultimately results in a friction force that slows or stops your vehicle. Leaks in any of the brake hoses can be a serious safety hazard, since inadequate brake fluid reduces your vehicle’s ability to stop on time.
